Masterminding Your Way To Greater Success
Years ago, some of the best advice I never took was "You can't succeed alone." It took me a long time to buy into this very simple concept. Today I belong to a mastermind group that meets every month and we’ve been doing it for seven years. Some of my best business ideas come from the creative people around me. It's hard to operate in a vacuum and try to do it all yourself. By opening your ideas and challenges up to a supportive team, you can get a flood of suggestions, experience, and contacts that can help you get your business to the next step much faster than if you try to go it alone. The idea of masterminding, a small group of like-minded individuals who come together to contribute to each others' success in a spirit of harmony and partnership, isn’t a new one. Great politicians and business people from history such as Theodore Roosevelt, John D. Rockefeller, Napoleon Hill, Dr. Alexander Graham Bell, Winston Churchill, Dale Carnegie all understood and applied the great power of collective thinking, of brainstorming and sharing.
Small businesses and solopreneurs are well suited to take advantage of mastermind concept. You can’t be at the top of your game without a team of smart people around you. Some of the main reasons: isolation, frustration, and overwhelm. Every owner of a small business or solopreneurs experiences these dream-killers at some point. Working alone can be lonely! All the things that are attractive about starting a business are also isolating. You have to learn how to do everything on your own, make your own decisions, and chart your own course. While this is thrilling, it can also be draining and difficult. Having a team behind you helps change that. In addition, to succeed you need input and encouragement. We don't often take the opportunity to step outside our business, take an objective viewpoint, and reconnect with our vision. A mastermind team provides different perspectives and leverages your ability to achieve. Everywhere else, you want your business to look good, so you put on a good face, but with your team, you can admit anything without being penalized. Participants have the freedom to bring up real issues and problems and know they it is safe and that they will be supported. For me I think the biggest benefit of a Mastermind group is the power of accountability and commitment. When my team puts their positive thoughts and energy behind me, I feel a surge of energy to accomplish what I’ve said I’ll do. Other types of support a mastermind team can provide can include ideas, a listening ear, and suggestions for action, encouragement, resources, and introductions to other people, celebration of successes, and more. Ultimately, each person must make their own decisions for their business, but it is wonderful to have access to the best thinking of people who know you and who care about your success. There's no need to go it alone.
